Frequently asked questions
Endoscopic spine surgery is the smallest form of minimally invasive spine surgeries that exists. It uses a tiny camera (endoscope) and small instruments to treat spine problems through an incision the size of a number 2 pencil.
Traditional spine surgery often involves large incisions, cutting muscle, bone removal and longer recovery. These are usually done with screws and rods and can result in significant pain after surgery. Endoscopic surgery is done through a tiny incision, with very little damage to your muscles, and allows you to go home the same day.
Yes — it’s very safe in experienced hands. In fact, it often has lower risks than open surgery, with less bleeding, fewer complications, and quicker recovery.
This is based on your preference! Endoscopic surgery can often be done with light sedation and local anesthesia. This can help you recover faster, but we get it- sometimes you want to be asleep. That's okay too!
Most patients walk out the same day and return to light activity immediately. Your arm or leg pain should resolve right after surgery! Full recovery is often weeks faster than traditional surgery.
Conditions like herniated discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis, bone spurs, and some cases of chronic back pain can be treated with endoscopic techniques. We can do so much more with the endoscope. Check out our "what we treat" (link).
Most patients report very little pain after surgery —much less than with traditional procedures. Many don’t even need strong pain medication afterward.
The incision is usually about the size of a pencil eraser — less than 1 cm. The scar is often barely noticeable once healed. We close your incision with glue and dress it with our very own ESINY bandage.
Endoscopic spine surgery is rapidly growing worldwide, but not all surgeons are trained in it yet. Even with proper training- case volume is important for the surgeon to perfect the technique. It requires specialized expertise and equipment, which is why only a few spine surgeons offer it at a high level. With our team of global experts under one roof, ESINY is the highest volume center in the country.
Many people are — even those who were told they need open surgery or even those that were told surgery is not an option! A consultation with an expert endoscopic spine surgeon can open new paths towards getting your life back.
In many cases, the results are just as good — or better — with far less recovery time. It’s precision surgery with a quality-of-life focus.
